The aptly named Masterminds stars four of the biggest comedic actors going. The question is will they all gel to produce one of this years unlikely successes, or will it be a case of too many chefs?
Apparently based on a real thing, Masterminds follows David Ghantt (Zach Galifianakis), an armoured truck driver with a need for adventure. He has a work relationship with Kelly (Kristen Wiig) who, with the help of conman Steve Chambers (Owen Wilson), makes David the centre of the biggest heist in American history, stealing $17 million from the company they both work for. However the plan is really shoddy, and although they made off with the money, David is wanted for the crime. At the same time, David is double-crossed by Steve, who hires hit-man Mike McKinney (Jason Sudekis) to take Ghantt out.
From looking at the trailer for the first time, I’m instantly sold on this film. These are four of the funniest actors going, and although I’m not the biggest fan of Owen Wilson, the others are three of my favourite comedic actors right now. And honestly, there’s not much else that can be said except that from the trailer this looks like a cool, funny film. I mean, this isn’t going to be going for awards or anything like that! This is just here to make us laugh.
Masterminds is set for release on the 28th August in the UK, and 9th October in the USA, which is a bigger deal than usual. For us this is probably a summer film, whereas for the Americans this falls somewhere between the summer and winter box-offices. Maybe they feel there’s too much competition in the States, whereas there’s more of a market for the summer comedy in the UK? Nonetheless it’s obvious they’ve thought about the release date, and the film should do well on both sides of the pond, so long as they promote it well!
Also, I know I’m using the word ‘review’ loosely here. It was just a dry week for trailers, with all the upcoming summer films (Ant-Man, Pixels, Paper Towns, Ted 2, Inside Out) already done! I looked at Speilberg’s Bridge of Spies, but honestly that was really boring.
