True Story is – strangely – a true story based upon the relationship that forms between ex New York Times journalist Michael Finkel (Jonah Hill) and criminal Christian Longo (James Franco), an FBI Most Wanted murderer living outside the USA under Finkel’s name. Longo will only reveal his story to Finkel, and while he sees this as a chance to get back into the world of journalism, many people around him think he is getting played by the criminal for his own means.
On the face of it, this is a film with a lot of potential. I don’t know the actual real-life story between these two but in terms of the story for this film it sounds like something that could keep the audience guessing throughout, which would be vital for this film to work I think. If it does keep us guessing about the characters motives, then there’s nothing stopping this from being a success. It’s also nice to see Jonah Hill playing a serious role again. Sure, he’s roles in films like This is the End and the Jump Street series are good and funny, but he is someone who can also do a quiet, serious role well too (think Moneyball) so it’s nice to see him going back to that.
So far it seems that it is only having a limited release, but if it has a successful Sundance Festival (January 2015) maybe it will be rolled out further. Right now, according to IMDB, it is only being released in limited USA cinemas in April 2015.
